artist spotlight: andrew bird

i thought i'd kick off this music blog by talking a bit about my fellow chicagoan, andrew bird.

it's really delightful, actually, to see someone who has such an intellectual understanding of music use his powers for good and not evil. unlike brian eno, who wasted his talent on heaps and heaps of ambient bullshit for years, andrew bird doesn't compose music just for his own enjoyment. his music is both beautiful and accessible, quite a feat for a classically trained musician with a BA in violin performance.

i've picked out a few of his songs for your enjoyment. this was particularly hard, because i've yet to meet an andrew bird song i didn't love. all of the music on the playlist is from his most recent three albums, for no other reason than their availability on project playlist.

also for your enjoyment, andrew bird's video for his song "imitosis":

that's all for now!

Brian Eno's ambient stuff set the stage for modern ambient/ post rock bands- Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed...etc. For what it is, it might not be great, but with all the equipment available today, pedals, guitars, amps, etc his stuff may be completely different, better by todays standards. And without his influence of some of the great bands in the genre may not have existed.

while i'll agree that eno's ambient trist was musically very good, i just can't enjoy it. it was, in a word, boring. i appreciate what he was trying to do, but it was more intellectual musings than music in my opinion.

I'd never heard of this guy, but I enjoyed listening to it as I wrote my stupid-ass astronomy lab. Good choice.

i discovered andrew bird a couple months ago, and just like with sufjan stevens and devendra banhart three years ago, it´s just changed the way i listen to music. some friends of mine who arrived yesterday from europe got me armchair apocrypha: what a beautiful album. it´s just wonderful.
now, i´m gonna stand in for brian eno. while some of his ambient work might be unquestionably boring, albums like evening star (w/robert fripp), music for airports and another greeen world (which relies heavily on ambient aesthetic and philosophy, even if at first glance doesn´t seem like a proper ambient album) are examples of genius music.
